Creating a Sacred Space

FullSizeRender-3.jpg

I recently took over our sitting room - I pushed the sofa to the opposite side of the room, took out all the 'extras' and was left with an entire blank wall.

I placed a little table in the corner, rolled out my yoga mat and gathered a few special things ... a beautiful crystal that I bought on a meditation retreat, a Ganesh statue from India and a candle that my best friend bought for me in Paris. Of course my Dharma Yoga Wheel and yoga blocks got a space too!

I felt so good after I did this. It's my special place to sit and just be. To practice yoga, to meditate, to write.

I have wanted to do this ever since I came back from teaching on a yoga retreat a couple of months ago. One of the organisers said something that really stuck. She said that by creating a sacred space we are telling the universe that there is room in our lives for the sacred. You need to create that space first to invite it into your life.

I didn't do this earlier because I thought I needed an entire, separate room. Knowing this isn't going to happen anytime soon, I settled for a corner. But the funny thing is that it doesn't feel like I've settled for anything. It's not the size of the space the counts, but rather what you fill that space with.

I hope you try it out and see for yourself. It can be just a corner, a little table or even a shelf. Clear it, make it uniquely yours with only a few special things and then own it. Use it as your space to re-connect and re-boot...
